I'd like to add my voice to what has already been said: Twelve Tone
sent me the Cakewalk v2.01 maintenance release without my so much as
making a peep. Great service!
And what's even better is that the program installed without a hitch,
and now patch caching with the GUS works fine! (Curiously enough,
there is still a message in the release notes which warns that a patch
caching error message may still appear, but that the sound card
probably has room to load the patches.)
Happy GUS'ing everyone, especially now that Cakewalk patch caches
correctly!

Subject: Re: Deritive MIDI Files
A MIDI file that contains a "cover" of a copyrighted work can be
considered a deritive work, a sound recording, or a performance. In all
three cases, the author is due royalties and failing to pay them is
illegal. CompuServe could meet the standards of legal royalties if they
paid the original author the "involuntary license" fee every time someone
downloaded the file (which is less than 6 cents).
As usual, the problem is that Compuserve is making money off of the work
of the artist and giving the artist nothing. Even if other users posted
the MIDI files, CompuServe is charging fees for access.

RE: MIDI files and the copyright laws.
So, Compuserve is getting sued, eh?
I thought that the MIDI files could be distributed as long as you weren't
making any money off of them.. I mean, it's not like we stole into the
musician's studio and copied their MIDI files off their workstations or
anything..
BTW, i found quite a few MIDI's on this site:
ftp wuarchive.wustl.edu
under the pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS area..
